William Patterson Smith papers, 1791-1943.

Personal and business correspondence and other papers of Smith; of his son-in-law, Isaac Howell Carrington, provost marshal and lawyer, of Richmond; and of their families. Nearly one-half of the collection relates to Smith's mercantile firm in Gloucester, the grain trade throughout the Chesapeake area, grain and land speculation, commodity prices, economic conditions, and foreign trade. Other papers concern social life and customs in Tidewater Virginia, slavery, religion, agriculture, education, U.S. territorial expansion, secession, life in the Confederacy, Reconstruction in Virginia, and family matters. Correspondents include William Jennings Bryan, Winfield Scott, Marion Seddon Smith, John Tyler, and Woodrow Wilson.
